Crossing the channel passing West of the Channel Islands into St Malo has got to be a highlight of the season, if we don’t get much of a chance to enjoy it during the race – we will on the way back! There is always a strong fleet in one of the longest channel races of the season. St Malo is famous for it’s oyster restaurants, and the crew of Playing Around is certain to eat and drink well after the race…
The race crews arrive just after Bastille day on the 14th July – elated RORC racers and the still celebrating French – what a combination!
Join the Boat: Thursday evening 16 July 2020 .c20:00hrs
Start: Haslar Marina, Gosport, 17 July 2020 06:30hrs
Finish: Haslar Marina, Gosport, 19 July 2020 pm or later…
The race crew meets on board on Thursday evening, with a plan to arrive around 20:00 which gives us time to run through a full safety briefing, get the boat organised and discuss our race strategy and tactics. Th evening is when we finalise our starting crew positions and set up a buddy and watch system for newer or less experienced crew members.
With a race start of 09:00, we will leave the dock by 06:30 and head to Cowes for the start – breakfast on the way, as a crew sails on it’s stomach!
Once out of the Solent, we start our watch system early, with a 4 hours on 4 hours off rota in daylight and 3 hour watches at night. The passage past the Channel Islands is always a highlight!
St Malo is a great place to visit, we will have a well earned meal and drink ashore before a good night’s sleep heading back to the Solent on Sunday morning.
Scheduled to arrive back late afternoon/early evening on Sunday – wind permitting, once the boat is sorted out then head off after a fine race weekend.
