The Round the Island Race is one of the greatest events in sailing, with 1200 yachts competing this historic 60 mile course. We will be as competitive as possible whilst having as much fun as possible!
The race crew meets on board on Friday morning, giving us time to run through a full safety briefing, get the boat organised and discuss the plan for the weekend before heading out for a days training. During the day we run through various crew positions and go over the deck layout and equipment in detail before a focus on manoeuvres and boat speed. Race ready, we head for our berth in Cowes and eat ashore amongst the throngs of competing crews.
It’s always a very early start, so it won’t be a late night…
After a crew briefing we will leave the dock by (very very early TBC…) and head into the start area hoisting sails and eating breakfast – there won’t be time after the start as we race out of the Solent in the midst of more than a thousand yachts…
Throughout the race we plan to move crew around the boat, giving everyone the opportunity to experience helming upwind and downwind, main, headsail and spinnaker trim, mast and foredeck.
After arriving in Cowes and sorting the boat out in it’s berth, we will head into town for some well deserved party time!
Saturday certainly won’t be an early night…
Sunday will have a leisurely breakfast on board before cruising gently back to Gosport, resplendent in our Team shirts.
And most importantly, regardless of the weather, we will have a great time!
